Last time, I wrote about the three habits of highly successful job seekers that I have observed after counseling thousands of people since 1996.
To recap, they are:

1) Begin with clarity;
2) Take immediate, intelligent, massive action; and
3) Leave your comfort zone

Today, I’d like to share three more habits that can put you on the fast track to your next job. Note: These are recession-proof. They work in good times and in bad.

After speaking and writing to more than 20,000 job seekers since 1996, I’ve met hundreds of folks who seem to sail smoothly from one position to the next, in good times and in bad.

What do they do differently from average job seekers, who take 19.7 weeks to get hired, according to Dec. 2008 figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics?

Working as an independent contractor in the finance world is an excellent way for you to gain flexibility, enjoy a variety of work and expand your professional network. Each year more and more finance professionals join the ranks for independent contractors and are better able to manage their work-life balance.

Moving on After Layoffs

• Realize that even though they kept their jobs, workers remain anxious.
• Communicate honestly with workers.
• Let them know if more layoffs are looming.
• Relate to workers on a personal level.
• It helps rebuild trust.

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Plan now for a potential layoffs and improve or add to your skill set at the same time.

The current economy has a number of people thinking it’s time to change careers. If you do it, make sure you know what you are getting into before making the switch. Here’s how to do just that.

In spite of the economy, job seekers are finding work. But employers want to keep their staffs, so counter offers have been more prevalent. If you get a counter offer, is it enough to keep you in place? It depends. You might be wise to pass on a counter offer.

Everyone knows the economy is in a funk. But salespeople who align their goals and business strategy with client needs will greatly improve their chances of success.
